There are two equal and opposite traps that people tend to fall into when it comes to taking responsibility for their circumstances.
One is to take on so much that it turns into self-blame. The people who do this fault themselves for everything that goes wrong, including things that have nothing to do with them. They have an almost superstitious belief that anytime something bad happens, it’s because of something they did.
The other is to blame other people and circumstances for your situation. Faulting the economy or the government for your finances, blaming the man or woman you’re attracted to for not returning your love, or using busy-ness as an excuse for not improving your life are all examples of this.
How do you take responsibility for your life,
without blaming yourself?
Here are a few simple steps you can use to claim your power, without belittling yourself:
1. Accept that you helped to create your situation, and forgive yourself.
Perhaps you got into a bad relationship because you had negative patterns of relating to people, and didn’t know any better.
Perhaps your finances are a mess because you never learned how to build wealth, and you feel like you’ve failed.
Whatever the case, understand that while you helped to create this situation, that doesn’t mean you’re inferior to the people who’ve succeeded where you struggle. It simply means you didn’t have the knowledge you needed to build the life you desire.
Also, recognize that the fact that you had the power to create this challenge means you also have the power to create the solution.
2. Understand what is and is not your responsibility.
For example, if someone is hostile and unpleasant to be around, you are not responsible for the wounds that led to their behavior. It isn’t your fault that they choose to act this way.
You are, however, responsible for your own reaction. You can let them make you angry, tolerate their abuse, gently but firmly stand up to them, or remove them from your life.
You aren’t always solely responsible for creating a situation, but you ARE always responsible for the way you respond. So choose wisely.
3. Take consistent action for your dreams.
If you never act, you will always stay powerless. So if you have a dream that seems too big, or a circumstance you want to overcome, it’s imperative that you do 4 things:
1. Get very clear on what you want. If you don’t have a specific vision for your future, your subconscious will have no target to aim for, the Law of Attraction won’t work for you, and it will be very difficult to come up with an effective plan of action.
2. Find a mentor who’s created what you want to create, or surmounted what you want to surmount. This will help you avoid fruitless actions that waste your time and energy and drain your self-confidence.
3. Put your mentor’s advice into consistent practice, and give it enough time to get results. Don’t give up just because you don’t see changes right away.
4. Create a mindset of success. If your mind and your actions are working in opposite directions, your results will always be slow, small and hard-earned. But when your conscious and subconscious mind are in alignment with the life you want to create, you’ll be amazed by how quickly and easily your dreams become reality.
