Have you ever gotten on the phone with a potential client, date or business contact, only to have the conversation wander in circles for a while without going anywhere?

ManOnPhoneNeither of you knew what to talk about. You exchanged updates but didn’t know what to do with the information. You conversed about things that weren’t really important to either of you… and before you knew it, you were out of time, and both of you moved on without getting what you needed from the conversation.

There’s a simple way to keep that from happening.

Before the start of every conversation, both as a Life Coach and in your day-to-day life, you need to set an intention. Intention is not the same as attachment – you aren’t going to tell yourself that “I’m GOING to enroll this client!”. Setting that kind of intention means you’re attached to the outcome and it’s hard to be present with another person when you’re thinking about your agenda.

Instead, you need to set an intention that isn’t attached to an outcome, but rather to the conversation itself.

Here are some steps you can use to set an intention that guides your conversations without turning them into agendas, so that each interaction builds relationships and gets results far faster than it would have otherwise.

1. Get clear about what you want.

Again, this isn’t the same as being fixated on an outcome. For example, when talking to a potential client, instead of saying “I’m going to enroll them”, say “I’m going to find out what they want to do with their life, and see if they’re willing to take action and invest in me so I can help them do it.”

Do you feel the difference? The first one gets you attached to a result, while the other helps you to determine what you want to talk about, without setting a demand on the other person to respond in a specific way.

You can apply this outside of your business as well. For example, “I’m going to approach that appealing person and be completely myself, without worrying about whether or not he/she likes me.”

2. Share your intention with someone who will support you and hold you accountable to take action.

Out of all the New Years resolutions that get made, the ones that are the most likely to be sustained are the ones that are shared with someone who will hold you accountable.

So share your intention with a mentor, peer, family member or friend who believes in your dreams and wants you to take action for them.

3. Do something TODAY to show your commitment to your intention.

If you have a potential client or business contact whom you’ve wanted to get in touch with for a while, but you keep on putting it off, call them. Today. If there’s a boundary you need to set with someone, arrange to talk with them, and approach the situation with an intention to gently and firmly state your needs.

Whatever the conversation is that you want to have, either have it today, or put it in your calendar right away.

4. Acknowledge your success, and take the next step.

Once you have set an intention and then carried it out, congratulate yourself. Reinforce this new, positive habit with self-praise and an emotional reward.

Then, set an intention for the next step you need to take.

What if you don’t have a support network, or you aren’t sure you can set or stick to the intention you want to put into action?
