Have you ever heard about Ford automobiles?
Of course you have. Very few people haven’t. But did you know that the company started out with a story that might be much like yours?
Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor Company, failed many times during his journey to success. His first venture into the automotive industry got dissolved only a year and a half after it started, because his stockholders lost confidence in him.
Despite this setback, Ford was able to gather enough capital to start again, only to be forced out of the company only one year later by pressure from his financiers.
Two lost companies in such a short amount of time… can you imagine how discouraging that must have been?
By that time, much of the motor industry had given up on him, and he had every reason to do the same to himself. But he was determined to create a successful vehicle company, so he found another investor to start the Ford Motor Company… and the rest is history.
Have you ever lost a business before? Started a big project, only to have it fail? Began a venture with high hopes, but never got the results you were looking for?
Some people might take that as a sign that they weren’t meant to be in business for themselves or that they don’t have what it takes to make it as a Life Coach.
Do you ever feel like that? Even worse – do you act on it?
Or do you do what Ford did: find someone who will believe in you, who will fill in the missing pieces and give you the help you need, and then try again?
I’d like you to take a moment to think about that. What are the missing pieces in your business? Is it the capital to get started, or a curriculum you can use with confidence? A good marketing strategy? Contacts in the industry?
If you think of one, write it down, along with all the fears surrounding it.
“I can’t find clients who are willing to pay me, so I’m afraid that I won’t be able to pay my bills and feed my family. I might have to get a job.”
“I don’t have enough time to give all my clients the time and attention they need. I’m trading all my hours for dollars, and I’m getting no time for myself. I’m afraid that I’m going to burn out and not be able to continue coaching.”
Whatever your fear or challenge is, write it down. Be sure to include all your fears, including the worst-case scenario.
Now, ask yourself: if the worst-case scenario happened, could you handle it? What would you do to get yourself out of that situation if it did come to pass? And what’s one action you can take now, to prevent that from happening?
This will help to take some of the fear and mystery out of potential ‘failure’, so that fear doesn’t keep you from moving forward – or worse, set you back.
Now, back to the action you came up with for yourself. If that action is something you can take on your own, wonderful! But if it isn’t, I’d love to see if I can help.
